Thank you for your interest in referring a child to Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Luis Obispo County! We're glad you're considering us, and we want to make sure this program is the right fit for your child. Here's what you should know.
What is our purpose?
At Big Brothers Big Sisters, we believe every child deserves a caring adult in their corner. Our program is built to help each enrolled child grow toward higher aspirations, greater confidence, stronger relationships, and educational success, while steering clear of risky behaviors. National research consistently shows that a positive relationship with a volunteer mentor (we call them "Bigs") makes a real, measurable difference in a child's life (we call the children in our program "Littles").
Littles in our program tend to:
- Feel more confident
- Stay away from drugs and alcohol more often
- Do better in school
- Build stronger relationships with family and friends
- Feel better about themselves
Who are our Bigs?
Our Bigs are everyday people from your community, students, retirees, members of local organizations, and caring adults who simply want to make a difference. Because your child's safety is our top priority, every Big goes through a thorough screening process conducted by our professionally trained staff.
Who are our Littles?
To join our program, a child should:
- Be ready to benefit from a relationship with a Big
- Want a Big and understand what that relationship looks like
- Have a parent or guardian willing to partner with us, staying in touch and keeping us informed of any changes at home
