Big Brothers Big Sisters - Summer Internship Opportunity 




A successful career academy internship:

  • Allows students to apply skills in a business setting
  • Allows students to observe and use current workplace practices and technologies
  • Enhances student’s core workplace skills: teamwork, time management, problem solving, communication skills, etc.
  • Provides students with a valuable foundation for any future career or college experience
  • Enables students to learn or explore an industry or career

 

Qualifications to be in the program:  

  • Be attending High School
  • 16 years of age or older 
  • Have an unweighted GPA of 2.5 or better
  • Have a social security card or other forms indicating you are able to work in the United States 
  • Have reliable transportation to get to an internship site 
  • Have a letter of recommendation from your mentor indicating you have good attendance, good behavior and have sufficient skills for an internship

 

Matching you to the right internship experience:

  • Participate in a brief interview with the Internship Coordinator/Area Manager to identify area(s) of interest
  • Placement will be based on area(s) of interest and availability of participating work sites

 

Paid Internship Opportunity:

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northeast Florida is working to leverage partnerships to provide a limited set of paid internship placements for the summer of 2024. Students may earn $15.00/hour, up to 90 hours total over the course of a 6 week placement period. Funding benefitting from the Rotary Club of Amelia Island Sunrise.


Internship Timeframe:

  • Internships average 15 hours per week for 6 weeks for a total of 90 hours; this is flexible based on employer capabilities
  • Internships cannot exceed 90 hours
  • Most internships will be from June – July 2024, though the weeks can stagger to accommodate vacations, camps, etc.
  • Most businesses are willing to arrange the internship times around other paid summer jobs students may have
  • Most summer internships are for three (3) days a week, but flexible based on the needs of the student and business

 

What to do if interested in being considered for an internship? 

  • Discuss this with your family to be sure you meet the qualifications, will be available to intern in the summer for six weeks, and that you have reliable transportation to get to an internship site
  • Complete the Academy Student Intern Request Form and Internship Agreement Form 
  • Submit a Cover Letter and Recommendation Letter from your Big by May 5th, 2024
  • Interviews will be arranged, and completed, by the end of May 2024

 

Note: Though we will do our best, we cannot ensure all students wanting an internship will be placed.

 

Responsibilities if you obtain an internship:

  • Fulfill the tasks of the internship in a professional manner following all rules and regulations of the worksite
  • Lena Ramsay, Nassau County Area Manager, will be your contact throughout your internship placement should any issues or questions arise
  • You and your intern supervisor will complete and send a weekly Timesheet/Evaluation to Lena Ramsay, Nassau County Area Manager
  • Attend the internship wrap-up/feedback meeting and complete an internship report; additional details to follow. Note, photos from the experience will enhance the report, though are not required
  • Attend established Rotary Club of Amelia Island Sunrise meeting to co-present to the group and share about the internship experience


Internship Process: 


  1. April: Receive internship information
  2. May 5th: Complete & submit Request Form, Agreement Form, Cover Letter, and Letter of Recommendation from your BBBSNEFL mentor
  3. May: Attend pre-placement training and mock interview session
  4. June-July: Complete internship placement; 90 hours over a 6 weeks and submit weekly timesheet/evaluations forms to Lena Ramsay
  5. July-August: Attend post-internship wrap-up/debrief meeting
  6. August-September: Attend and present at Rotary Club of Amelia Island Sunrise meeting (date TBD)
