Big Brothers Big Sisters of Eastern Massachusetts proudly partners with families and volunteers from all backgrounds, races and beliefs. We expect all the members of our mentoring community to bring their whole selves into their mentoring relationships. Any language, beliefs, attitudes or values that perpetuate racism within our mentoring community are in contrast with this commitment. Like in any relationship, mentorship may have some challenges or concerns. There may be ups and downs in consistency, communication, need for patience, and upholding responsibilities.

- Children may be hesitant to open up and show appreciation. Relationships will evolve over time and may take some getting used to.

- It is critical to communicate with parents to schedule outings, being “pleasantly persistent.”

- Our program focuses on free and low-cost activities. We ask that you refrain from buying gifts for your Little. Relationships should be about the time you spend together

- The involvement of a match support staff member assigned to your match is mandatory. They’re available to you to aid with behavior management, planning outings, and age appropriateness. You will have monthly calls for the first year and calls every 3 months thereafter.

Safety is our #1 priority at Big Brothers Big Sisters. The full safety policy can be found here:

https://emassbigs.org/fy23-safety-guidelines/. This document includes but is not limited to rules specifying that:

- Outings are to be in public places, and Bigs should proactively develop a safety plan with the Little’s guardian

- If you’re ever in a car, Littles shall be in the back seat if they’re under 13 and in a booster seat in back if under 8

- Littles are to wear helmets and safety equipment for any athletic activities, including a life jacket during any water activities

- Littles are only allowed in the Bigs home after 3 outings after agreement with the parent or guardian and after any potential pets, weapons, or other risky items are appropriately secured

- Overnight activities are extremely rare and only allowed after the first year of the match

- You are required to let BBBS know if you become aware that a child may be experiencing any trauma, abuse or neglect, or other safety concerns.
