Enrolling a youth in the Colorado Springs area

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Colorado offers several types of mentoring programs in the Colorado Springs area. Below is some information on each program. Don't worry, you don't need to make a decision before inquiring! We can help you make that choice and will be available to answer any questions you have!
Criteria
To be a candidate for our programs:
  • Youth must be between the ages of 9-13 at the time of enrollment.
  • We prioritize youth who are from a single-parent household, kinship care, or are from a nontraditional household.
  • We prioritize youth who are low-income or facing adversity.
We also consider:
  • Is the youth and family interested in participating in the program?
  • Is the youth in the right place to start the program?
If the child does not meet our qualifications or is outside the 9-13 age range there are several other mentoring agencies operating in Colorado. Please click here for more information about other agencies.
Program Option: Community Mentoring
Our traditional program in which each Big and Little meet several times per month and choose activities to do together in the community based on shared interests and goals.
  • Mentors and mentees commit to meet two to four times a month for 2-4 hours per activity.
  • Mentors and Parents / Guardians communicate with one another to determine when match gets together.
  • Matches choose their activities together; expectation is that activities are low- and no-cost.
  • BBBSC program staff supervise the match and provide support to all parties.
As a special focus serving our military community in Colorado Springs, Operation Mentor focuses on providing mentors for children in military families. We matches military children ages 9-16 with a volunteer mentor to provide the child with guidance, support, and encouragement. This program operates in the same manner as our Community-based program (described above), offering matches the freedom and autonomy to choose their own activities.
Program Option: Sports Buddies
Our sports-focused program where matches meet one or two times per month to participate in agency supervised activities that involve attending and/or participating in sports.
  • Mentors and mentees build relationships at structured, staff-facilitated, sports-related events.
  • BBBSC program staff supervise the match and provide support to all parties.
  • Events and activities are all planned for matches and are 100% free.
  • Transportation to events is required. Youth will meet their Big Brother at the event. Unfortunately this program is not a good fit for families that use public transportation.
  • Most events are on Saturdays (2-4 hours). Youth need to be available 1-2 Saturdays a month
